The Coleman-Mach Story
Today, Coleman-Mach is a leader in RV air conditioning with over 8 million units produced for RVs and specialty vehicles worldwide. But our company’s achievements are not just a modern-day success story, Coleman-Mach’s history dates all the way back to the original RV air conditioner debuted in 1967.
In the summer of 1966 Sheldon Coleman, head of the Coleman® Company, was on his annual camping trip to test their new product lines set to launch during the upcoming year. Unlike the years before, however, this year Sheldon opted to try out a new motorhome instead of sleeping in the traditional Coleman® tent. And while he found the new style of camping in motorhomes incredibly enjoyable, he did have one arching complaint: it was too hot at night to sleep comfortably.
When Sheldon returned, he instructed his team that "before the trip next year, they need to design an air conditioner to cool the coach down". Thus, set into motion a group of engineering minds that crafted the first RV air conditioner, the PolarPal that was debuted by the Coleman® Company in 1967. Since that time, as the Coleman® Company and later as Coleman-Mach under Airxcel, the Coleman name has remained a leader in climate control systems.
Nowadays, Coleman-Mach is well known in the RV, boat and off-road vehicle industry with numerous additional applications in specialty fields. From a singular unit in 1967, Coleman-Mach has grown over the last 55 years to better serve a wide range of recreational lifestyles developing a diverse portfolio of air conditioners, heat pumps, ceiling assemblies, climate control accessories, thermostats, and conversion kits.
Coleman-Mach is headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, and is part of the Airxcel family of brands that also includes Maxxair, Aqua-Hot, CAN, Cleer Vision, Dicor Products, ECI, MCD Innovations, Suburban, United Shade, Velarium and Vixen Composites.
